The Red Sox hit 23 hits in the loss against the Orioles

Boston — Yenier Cano retired Emmanuel Valdez on a game-ending fly ball to strand a potential tying run at third, and the Baltimore Orioles beat the Boston Red Sox 13-12 on Saturday, whose attempt comeback in the ninth inning fell short.

Boston had 23 hits in the game.

The last team to give up that many hits in a loss was the 1930 Phillies.

James McCann contributed a pair of home runs to the cause of the Orioles, who achieved their seventh victory.

Baltimore, closing in on its first playoff berth in seven years, took a 7-2 lead in the fourth inning, a 12-6 lead in the seventh and a 13-9 lead in the ninth. Aaron Hicks and rookie Gunnar Henderson hit three-run homers, while Jordan Westburg hit a solo shot.

The Orioles (90-51) won for the 13th time in 16 games and became the first American League team to reach 90 wins on the season. They maintained a four-game lead over second-place Tampa Bay in the East Division.

Shintaro Fujinami (7-8) covered one and two-thirds innings.

For the Orioles, Venezuelan Anthony Santander was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and one RBI. Mexican Ramon Urias went 1-1 with an RBI. Dominican Jorge Mateo 3-1 with one run scored.

For the Red Sox, Mexican Alex Verdugo went 1 for 5 with an RBI. The Dominicans Rafael Devers 6-4 with two runs scored and one RBI, Valdez 6-2 with one run scored. Venezuelan Abreu went 5-5 with two runs scored and three RBIs.
