The World Boxing Council expels boxer Ryan Garcia after racist insults on social media

The World Boxing Council (WBC) on Thursday expelled Ryan Garcia, who repeatedly uttered insults against black people and Muslims during a live broadcast on social media.

Mexican Mauricio Sulaiman, president of the WBC, announced the sanction against Garcia on social media X.

“In my authority as WBC President, I hereby expel Ryan Garcia from any activity with our organization.”wrote Sulaiman. “We reject any form of discrimination.”

Garcia posted an apology on the same social network.

“I was just being a nuisance. I don’t want anyone to be killed,” Garcia said. “I love you all. I’m sorry if I offended you.”

An attorney representing Garcia did not immediately respond to an email from The Associated Press seeking comment.

Last month, the New York State Athletic Commission suspended Garcia for a year. It also ruled that his April 20 victory over Devin Haney was invalidated after a positive drug test.
