There is a new all-time hitting leader in MLB with the integration of Negro Leagues statistics

NY — Josh Gibson became the historic leader of the Big leagues, with a .372 average, to surpass Ty Cobb’s .367 on Tuesday, when the statistics of more than 2,300 Negro Leagues players were added to the rest after a three-year research project.

Gibson’s .466 average in 1943 for the Homestead Grays also became the best figure in baseball history, followed by Charlie “Chino” Smith’s .451 with the New York Lincoln Giants.. Both surpassed the .440 that Hugh Duffy achieved with the Boston team of the National League in 1894.

Gibson is now also the leader in career slugging percentage (.718) and OPS (1.177). He surpassed Babe Ruth (.690 and 1,164).

“This initiative focuses on ensuring that future generations of fans have access to the statistics and milestones of everyone who made the Negro Leagues possible,” Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement.
