They find a temperate exoplanet, potentially habitable and relatively close to Earth

Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain — An international investigation has found in the constellation Pisces a temperate planet, intermediate in size and located in the potentially habitable zone of its starto some 40 light years from Earthas reported this Thursday by the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canary Islands (IAC), a Spanish Atlantic archipelago.

The planet has been named Gliese 12 b and its discovery has been possible thanks to observations from NASA’s Tess satellite and facilities such as the Carmenes spectrograph, at the Calar Alto Observatory (Almeria), and MuSCAT2, from the Carlos Sanchez telescope, at the Teide Observatory ( Tenerife), in the Canary Islands.

Gliese 12 b is located within the habitable zone of its stara cold red dwarf, which makes it “a promising candidate” to study its atmosphere with the James Webb Space Telescope, the IAC said in a statement.

It is the temperate exoplanet of Closest Earth-like size to date detected with transit methodthat is, observing the periodic dimming of its star caused by the passage of the planet.
