Thomas Rivera Schatz describes this Legislative Assembly as “the most unproductive”

After completing the work of the seventh and last ordinary session of the quadrennium, the spokesperson of the New Progressive Party (PNP) in the Senate, Thomas Rivera Schatz, cataloged this Legislative Assembly –led in both chambers by the People’s Democratic Party (PPD) – as “the most unproductive and inconsequential in the history of Puerto Rico.”

“The net balance of this Legislative Assembly of the Popular Party is a failure”said the Senate leader, during a press conference held less than 12 hours before the closing of the work for this four-year period.

Immediately, the president of the Senate, Jose Luis Dalmaurejected the accusations and pointed out that “it is painful” to hear a former legislative president “try to tarnish the extraordinary work of this Senate during this quadrennium.”

“This Senate has worked tirelessly to overcome ideological and programmatic differences for the benefit of all Puerto Ricans”Dalmau stated in written statements.

According to data from the Single Legislative Procedure System presented by Rivera Schatz, during the 2013-2017 Legislative Assembly, 1,732 bills were filed in the Senate, 356 – or 20% – of which became law. Meanwhile, during the 2017-2021 period, precisely under his presidency, 1,695 projects were submitted and 410 became law, for 24%.
