The Court of First Instance in Humacao granted Delwin “Tuntun” Berrios Navarro a resource of habeas corpus, leaving him on supervised release until the trial against him is completed.
The appeal was granted after the legal process against the accused did not begin six months after the charges were filed against him, although the Department of Justice assured through a press release that the Public Ministry “he has always been prepared to hold the trial”.
“In this case, said term has been extended mainly due to the defense of the accused, who has changed his legal representative on eight occasions”Justice reported in its statements.
Berrios Navarro will remain under surveillance 24 hours a day and will not be able to leave the island or change residence without prior authorization from the court. If he does not comply with the conditions provided by that forum, he will be found in contempt and will have to return to prison.
The man is accused of being the leader of a criminal gang linked to over eight murders that occurred in Humacao, Yabucoa and San Lorenzo. Berrios Navarro was captured in September of last year, in an operation in the Quebrada Arena neighborhood of San Lorenzo. According to the investigation, Berrios Navarro’s organization was linked to the murder of Juan R. Aponte Figueroa23 years old, in the back of the Martorell parcels field, in Yabucoa, on July 3, 2021.
This crime caught the attention of the public, as a video circulated on social networks captured the sounds of the shooting, very close to where a youth basketball game was taking place.
The other crime related to the accused occurred on April 30 of this year, when Luis Angel Ortiz Castro was shot in the Calabazas neighborhood of Yabucoa. This 27-year-old young man appeared as the main witness in a case against “Tuntun”.
