Two large forest fires burn near Athens

Athens – Two bigs forest fires burned on Sunday near Athensthe capital of Greeceand authorities sent emergency messages for some residents to evacuate and others to stay home and close their windows to protect themselves from the smoke.

The first fire, southeast of Athens, started in the early afternoon. Local authorities indicated that it destroyed at least four houses and several cars. As of 6:00 p.m., no victims have been reported.

The flames were approaching the port of Lavrio, about 37 miles southeast of Athens. The area has suffered forest fires in recent years. A small forest to the south, near Cape Sounio, could also be in danger.

A second, fast-moving fire later broke out north of Athens near the suburb of Stamata. It burned through brush and forest and climbed 3,600 feet up Mount Penteli, one of four mountains surrounding the capital area.
