Two other states in southern Mexico report deaths of howler monkeys due to the heat

Mexico CityHowler monkeys have died from heat in two more southern states Mexicoafter two other states reported deaths of the animals a few weeks agoenvironmental officials reported.

Mexico’s Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT) reported Tuesday night that monkey deaths had been reported in Chiapas and three states in the Gulf of Mexico: Tabasco, Campeche and Veracruz.

SEMARNAT also said that tests indicated that the primates died from heat stroke, but that the country’s drought and “scarcity of water in the streams and springs in the areas where the monkeys live” have contributed to the deaths.

The agency did not provide the most recent estimate on the number of deaths, but had previously said that at least 57 birds had died since deaths began being reported in early May.
