Geneva — An African woman is, on average, 130 times more likely to die from complications of pregnancy or childbirth than a woman in Europe or North Americaas indicated on Wednesday by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA)which denounced the growing inequality in reproductive and sexual health and rights around the world.

The report “State of world population” most recent UNFPA It also estimates that there are almost 800 maternal deaths related to pregnancy and childbirth, and shows that women with African roots in the Americas are more likely to die in childbirth than white women.

“The vast global advances in reproductive and sexual health over the past 30 years are marred by an ugly truth: millions of women and girls have not benefited because of who they are or where they were born“, the fund indicated in a statement.

The rate of unplanned pregnancies has fallen by almost a fifth since 1990 and the maternal mortality rate has fallen by more than a third since 2000, said Dr. Natalia Kanem, executive director of UNFPA.
