UN Security Council approves first ceasefire resolution to end war in Gaza

The Security Council of United Nations overwhelmingly approved its first resolution on Monday to support a ceasefire plan aimed at ending the eight-month war between Israel and Hamas in Loop.

The resolution, promoted by the United States, welcomes a ceasefire proposal that was announced by President Joe Biden and that, according to the United States, has already been accepted by Israel. The measure calls on the Palestinian militant group Hamas to accept a three-stage plan.

The resolution — approved by 14 of the 15 members of the Security Council and the abstention of Russia— calls on Israel and Hamas “to fully implement its terms, without delay and without conditions.”

It remains to be seen whether Israel and Hamas agree to go ahead with the plan, but strong support for the resolution in the UN’s most powerful body puts additional pressure on both sides to approve the proposal.
