Victor Vasarely’s grandson reports that French court validated the confiscation of works of art in San Juan

The president of the Vasarely Foundation, Pierre Vasarely, announced that a French court “validated” the seizure of 112 pieces by the late artist Victor Vasarely by federal authorities in Puerto Rico last year.

Agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) executed a search and seizure warrant in April 2023 as part of a criminal case in Paris against Michele Taburno-Vasarely, the daughter-in-law of the so-called father of optical art.

Taburno-Vasarely’s lawyers have attempted to appeal the seizure order, while in the Federal Court in San Juan they have filed a lawsuit seeking the return of the works, alleging violations of rights under U.S. law.

In a press release, Pierre Vasarely said the order for confiscation was validated in a judgment issued by the Investigation Chamber of the Paris Court of Appeal on July 4.
