Virginia couple accused of using adopted black children as slaves

A couple who were arrested after some of their adopted children were found locked in a shed at their home in W.V. She will be tried this year on charges that, according to a judge, involve her use as “slaves.”

Donald Ray Lantz and Jeanne Kay Whitefeather face trial this year after they were indicted on 16 counts each for civil rights violations, human trafficking, forced labor, gross child neglect and falsifying an application to obtain a court-appointed attorney. All but one of the charges are felonies.

Lantz and Whitefeather are white. The four children whose initials appear on the indictment are black.

The indictment said Lantz and Whitefeather forced, threatened and interfered with “the free exercise and enjoyment of any rights and privileges” of the four children.
