Wanda Vazquez says she will not use classified material for her defense in the federal trial

The defense of the former governor Wanda Vazquez Garced informed the Federal Court in San Juan that he will not use “classified” documents as part of his defense in the trial on corruption charges.

The notice from the lawyer Ignacio Fernandezthe former official’s lawyer, is responding to a motion from the federal prosecutor’s office filed late last month, requesting that a protocol be established so that the parties in the case have access to “national security” material protected by the “Classified Information Procedures” Act (CIPA).

In his motion to respond, Fernandez indicated that the Attorney General’s proposal is in response to the fact that “it has learned that one or more of the accused will seek defenses that involve classified national security information.” However, the lawyer stressed that the Attorney General’s suggestion does not indicate that this is because the Attorney General’s Office itself is “planning to use classified material in this case.”
