“We must be vigilant”: they anticipate an increase in dengue cases after the summer

Although the most recent data from the Health Department about the infections of dengue report a slight decrease in the last two weeks –although they remain above the epidemic threshold–, the agency’s projections are that the peak of this viral infection will be seen in the coming months, since its high season runs between August and December, coinciding with the rain pattern.

“Compared to last year, we have 270% more (infections). By this date (in 2023), there were about 315 to 320 cases and, this year, we already have 1,168.”the doctor explained Melissa Marzanprincipal Health Epidemiology officer.

He pointed out, however, that there has not been a trend of increasing cases, since the reports show a fluctuation in the number of infections registered with Health. “In the summer, at the end of July and September, (we) should see more dengue transmission in Puerto Rico,” she stressed.

Two and a half months after he declared dengue epidemic On the island, Rincon remains the municipality with the highest incidence this year, followed by Canovanas, Aguada, Carolina and San Juan.
