What can happen if you clench or grind your teeth while sleeping?

Bruxism, characterized by grinding of the teethaffects both children and adults. It is often mistakenly associated with parasites, when in reality it is a parafunction of the organism.

In children, bruxism may be related to tooth replacement and jaw growth. It may happen that “the child, at five or six years old, tries to achieve adequate occlusion and begins to grind his teeth looking for adequate exclusion”according to Dr. Angelica Melo Suescun, specialist in oral rehabilitation.

Melo emphasizes the importance of identifying bruxism triggering factors, which may include bone morphology, dental malocclusion, stress and alterations of dream.

“There is daytime and nighttime bruxism. Unconsciously it is associated with an iatrogenic condition.”explained the specialist, adding that muscle relaxant plates are a viable option, but not without first having corrected all the factors surrounding bruxism.
