What happened on Holy Wednesday? These were the events that culminated in the crucifixion of Jesus

Holy Week has great meaning for the Catholic community because, until the arrival of Easter Sunday, the previous days of Jesus and his sufferings until he died crucified are remembered. Although the day of greatest reflection and prayer is concentrated on Friday, it is important to know what happened on Holy Wednesday and thus experience the biblical events in greater detail.

During the Wednesday of Holy Week, three events in the life of Jesus are commemorated, which have been popularly known and which are worth remembering in these days prior to Easter Sunday.

The wealthy conspiracy

On the one hand, one of the points that the faithful remember on Holy Wednesday is the conspiracy of the elite of Jerusalem to imprison Jesus, concerned about his preaching against the accumulation of wealth. In the same way, with some of his actions, such as the expulsion of the merchants from the temple, Jesus tried to distance the faithful from the profit represented by those who wanted to overthrow him.

For this reason, the biblical tradition contained in the Gospel according to Saint Matthew tells that on Wednesday “the princes of the priests and the elders of the people gathered in the palace of the pontiff, called Caiaphas.” It was in that meeting, behind society’s back, that they defined “the way to seize Jesus by deception to kill him.”
