The National Women’s 3×3 Basketball Team advanced undefeated to the semifinals of the Pan American Games Santiago 2023 with a 20-16 victory over Mexico.
The Puerto Ricans will play in the medal round on Monday starting at 3:30 pm when they clash against Colombia for a place in the final.
Against the Mexicans, Annelisse Vargas was the best with eight points, followed by five goals from Ashley Torres. Mari Placido had four and Paola Maldonado three.
Puerto Rico trailed 12-9 with 4:59 on the clock when they scored six straight points to take the lead. A two-point basket by Vargas broke a 12-12 tie with 2:37 left.
The Puerto Rican team’s advance was 11-4 to take the victory at the expiration of regulation time.
Earlier, the women’s quintet beat Venezuela 22-11 to dominate their key in the group stage. On Saturday, they defeated Jamaica 22-11.
These are the first Pan American Games for a Puerto Rican women’s 3×3 team.
The men’s trio later looked to advance to the semifinals, also undefeated, with a victory over Venezuela.
